Landslides and Building Collapses Cause Widespread Devastation

HUALIEN, Taiwan - Rescuers are working tirelessly to free dozens of people trapped in the rubble following a powerful earthquake that struck the east coast of Taiwan on Tuesday morning. The quake, with a preliminary magnitude of 7.4, triggered landslides and caused buildings to collapse, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. According to the latest reports, at least eight people have died and over 200 have been injured.

The epicenter of the quake was located 43 kilometers east-southeast of Hualien County Hall, and it was felt across the island nation. The Taiwan Central Weather Bureau has issued multiple aftershock warnings, with dozens of tremors of varying intensities recorded since the main event.

Rescue crews, including firefighters, military personnel, and volunteers, are using heavy equipment and search dogs to locate and free survivors trapped beneath the debris. Several buildings have been partially or completely collapsed, including the Yun Men Tsz Chi Buddhist Monastery in Hualien City, which is a popular tourist destination.
