Europa League: Jeremie Frimpong's Goal Gives Leverkusen Advantage Over West Ham

Match Recap

Michail Antonio's early goal gave West Ham United the lead in the UEFA Europa League knockout round play-off first leg against Bayer Leverkusen, but the German side ultimately triumphed with a 3-1 aggregate victory. Bayer Leverkusen won the second leg 2-0, thanks to goals from Jeremie Frimpong and Moussa Diaby.

West Ham started the match brightly and took the lead through Antonio's close-range finish in the 17th minute. However, Leverkusen gradually gained control of the game and equalised through Frimpong's deflected effort in the 27th minute. West Ham had chances to restore their lead, but they were unable to convert their chances.

Second Leg Dominance

In the second half, Leverkusen continued to press and eventually took the lead in the tie through Diaby's goal in the 64th minute. West Ham pushed for an equaliser, but Leverkusen defended resolutely and held on for the win.

The result leaves West Ham with a mountain to climb in the second leg at the London Stadium next week. Bayer Leverkusen will be confident of progressing to the last 16 of the competition.
