The Benz Patent-Motorwagen: The First Car with Axle Steering
A Revolutionary Invention
Carl Benz, a German inventor, made history in January 1886 when he received a patent for his revolutionary vehicle, the Benz Patent-Motorwagen Victoria. This three-wheeled vehicle was the first to feature axle steering, a groundbreaking innovation that has become a standard feature in modern cars.
A Vehicle of Simplicity
Despite its historical significance, the Benz Patent-Motorwagen was a remarkably simple vehicle. It had no roof, no steering wheel, and only a single-cylinder 0.85-horsepower engine. Yet, despite these limitations, it was capable of reaching a top speed of 10 miles per hour.
